Welcome to the 2024 – 2025 school year!

Syllabus

Homework/Notebook

EVERY problem on a homework assignment must show some attempt or thought process in order to be considered complete. Showing your work is a requirement! You will get the most out of this class if all assignments are completed and notebooks are kept neat and organized. I usually give 5-10 minutes at the end of class to work on homework.

Absences and Make Up Work: Students who are absent from my class are responsible for collecting any missing work and notes from the days of their absence(s). If an absence occurs, it is very important and expected that student uses all resources (Canvas), calls a class member, or checks the missing/extra work/copies bin.

Classroom Routines:

*Arrive on time.

*Come prepared with:

Communication

Powerschool will show students’ grades and be updated weekly. Canvas will be updated daily with assignments and content presentations. General resources are posted on Mrs. Nelsons Website If you have any questions or concerns, EMAIL/TALKING POINTS is the best way to reach me. Please allow 24 hours for a response or the Monday following a weekend email/text.

Grading Policy

The point system will be used for grading. To determine a student’s grade, the number of points earned for the quarter is divided by the total possible points for that quarter. Points are converted to a percentage and letter grade at the end of the quarter.

Grading Procedures                    Grading Scale

Tests: 25-50 points                                A: 90- 100

Quizzes: 1-10 points                                              B: 80-89

Homework: 0- 1 point                                          C: 70-79

Classwork: 1- 15 points                                        D: 60-69

Projects: 1-20 points                                             F: < 59

Late Work Policy

Work turned in after the due date, but prior to the late work deadline can earn up to an 80% grade.

Point Recovery: Point recovery is available if a student scores less than a 70% on an assessment. Students will be asked to complete all missing work relevant to assessment, attend a small group session with teacher, and complete point recovery assignment. They can earn up to a maximum of 70%.

Participation

You are expected to complete all classwork. You are also expected to participate in all group/class discussions. Participation comes in many forms: written, spoken, whiteboards, post it notes, manipulatives, etc.

Interactive Notebook

The purpose of the interactive notebook is to help create a year-long portfolio of class notes, classwork, homework, and assessments. Interactive notebooks are intended to help you remain organized throughout the year and are beneficial for EOC/EOG review.

*Math 1 students: Your EOC score is 20 percent of your final grade.

Guidelines: Notebooks must be brought each day to math class. There will be designated days that notebooks will be used to assess student learning, participation, and completion of assignments. It is helpful to have the unit, lesson, and date specified and all loose leaf papers properly secured in the notebooks. You may glue/clip/staple notes and handouts into the notebook. Keep in mind, the notebook is a reflection of your academic performance.

Supplies: Students will need to come prepared with their supplies each day. Math workbooks, PENCILS, calculators, devices, and interactive workbooks are required!  Highlighters/markers/expos/protractors are helpful tools but not required.

Math 8-Open-Up by Illustrative Mathematics: Students are provided with workbooks for each unit. It is a very hands-on approach to learning mathematics that promotes conceptual understanding and fosters collaboration. A Family Letter from WCPSS can be accessed via the QR code. Students are familiar with this curriculum as they have used it in 6th and 7th grade.
